You spent more than $50 on a pair of recycled-polyester leggings. Six washes later they're pilling, the seams have lost their stretch, and the colour looks tired. It feels like the brand cheated you — but in most cases, it's the laundry routine, not the garment.
Recycled activewear behaves differently to old-school cotton. The fibres are technically sound but they react badly to high heat, harsh detergents, and the wrong dryer cycle. After two years of building activewear at Freedom, the same handful of laundry habits explain almost every "why does this look terrible already" complaint we get. The good news is that fixing them adds a year or more to the life of every piece in the drawer.
Here is what we have learned, what to actually do, and where the common advice gets it wrong for Sydney conditions.
What "recycled activewear" actually is
Most activewear marketed as recycled is made from rPET — recycled polyester spun from PET plastic bottles. A typical pair of leggings contains 8 to 12 reclaimed bottles. Some brands blend the recycled polyester with elastane (Lycra or Spandex) at around 12 to 22 per cent for stretch, and a few use recycled nylon (rNylon, often branded ECONYL) for activewear with more compression.
The reason recycled fabric needs different care is not the recycled bit — it is the polyester bit. Polyester is essentially a plastic fibre. It tolerates a narrower band of heat than cotton, repels water but absorbs oil, and develops static more easily. Add elastane to the mix and you also have to worry about the elastic memory breaking down at high temperatures.
Cotton forgives a hot wash. Polyester does not.
Is recycled polyster activewear good?
The four habits that kill recycled activewear early
These show up in our customer feedback over and over, in roughly this order of damage:
1. Washing too hot
Anything over 30°C starts to weaken polyester fibres. At 40°C the elastane begins losing memory after 10 to 15 cycles. At 60°C — a "white wash" temperature most Sydney machines have as a default — the fibres can deform permanently in a single cycle.
The fix is straightforward: cold water, every wash, no exceptions. Cold water also keeps colours vivid — polyester dye bleeds at higher temperatures, especially on darker colours like black, navy and forest green that activewear brands rely on.
2. Putting it in the dryer
This is the single biggest cause of activewear that "shrinks" or loses its stretch within months. Tumble dryers run at 50 to 70°C on low heat and 80 to 90°C on high heat. Either setting damages elastane.
Air-drying is the only safe option. In Sydney's climate, recycled activewear dries indoors in 4 to 6 hours and outdoors in 1 to 2 hours. The trick is to keep it out of direct UV — hang it under a verandah, on a clothes rack inside, or on the back of a door. Direct summer sun fades dyes and breaks down elastane through heat as much as through light.
3. Using fabric softener
Fabric softener works by coating fibres in a thin waxy layer. On cotton this feels nice. On polyester it clogs the wicking channels that move sweat away from the skin — exactly the property you bought activewear for.
After 10 to 15 washes with softener, recycled polyester loses most of its sweat-management performance. Customers describe the symptoms as the leggings "feeling sticky" or "not breathing the way they used to". The damage is not reversible. Once the wicking is coated, it stays coated.
The fix: a small amount of liquid detergent designed for synthetics (Ecostore Active, ECOS Sportswear, OMO Sport) and zero softener. Half a cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle every 5 or 6 washes resets any residual buildup and removes lingering sweat odour without coating the fibres.
4. Washing it inside out — actually no, let me correct that
Most laundry guides recommend washing activewear inside out. We tested this on our own production samples and the result is more nuanced. Inside out helps protect printed graphics and reduces friction on the outer surface, but it also exposes the inner panels — usually the gusset, waistband and seams — to more abrasion against the washing drum. For seamless or compression-heavy pieces, that can shorten the life of the garment.
What actually matters more is using a mesh laundry bag. A $6 mesh bag from Big W or Coles isolates each piece from contact with zips, hooks and rough fabrics in the load. We have customers in their fourth year of wearing the same Freedom Tall Leggings — they all use mesh bags.
What to do, in order, every wash
For anyone who wants the routine without the why, here is the short version we send to customers who ask:
- Pre-rinse heavy sweat in cold water by hand. Especially after a sauna session, hot yoga, or a humid Sydney summer run. Salt and sweat residue degrade fibres faster than the wash itself.
- Mesh bag, separated by colour. Darks together, lights together. Avoid mixing with rough fabrics like denim or towels.
- Cold cycle, gentle setting. Most front-loaders have a "delicates" or "sport" cycle. If the machine only has temperature control, set it to cold and the spin to medium or low.
- Liquid detergent for synthetics, half a normal dose. Activewear detergent is a real category — most major brands now offer one. If you only have regular detergent, use less than the bottle says (about half).
- Skip fabric softener entirely. Add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse every 5 to 6 washes.
- Air dry indoors or under shade. Hang from the waistband, not the legs. Shake out before hanging to reduce drying time.
- Store folded, not hung on hangers. Polyester stretches under its own weight when hung wet, and slightly even when dry. Folding preserves the cut.
That is the full routine. It takes about 30 seconds longer than the bad routine. The garment lasts two to three times longer.
What does NOT matter as much as the internet thinks
Some advice circulates as gospel that does not actually move the needle:
Detergent eco rating — environmentally relevant for the planet but largely neutral for fibre life. A low-suds eco detergent washes the same way a regular one does at the same temperature.
Washing machine brand — modern front-loaders with proper delicates cycles all behave similarly. Top-loaders with central agitators are slightly harsher but not catastrophic if you use a mesh bag.
Washing every wear — most activewear can comfortably do 2 to 3 wears between washes if it is aired out properly between uses. Hang in a ventilated room (not in the gym bag) for an hour after each wear. Skin contact wear (sports bras, leggings worn under streetwear) needs more frequent washing; outerwear like jackets and joggers needs less.
Hand-washing vs. machine washing — for properly constructed activewear, a cold gentle machine cycle is barely different to hand washing. Hand washing is only worth the time for delicate detail (mesh inserts, lace panels) or pieces with hand-printed graphics.
When even the right routine doesn't save it
There is a point at which activewear is genuinely worn out — typically at the 80 to 120 wash mark for elastane-heavy pieces. Signs:
- Waistband elastic that no longer recovers when stretched
- Faded colour even after a cold wash and shade dry
- Visible thinning at high-friction zones (inner thigh, between shoulders, gusset)
- Persistent odour that vinegar rinse no longer removes (a sign the synthetic fibres themselves have absorbed bacteria)
When that point arrives, recycled polyester garments can be sent to clothing recyclers rather than landfill. Upparel (uppy.com.au) collects worn activewear for textile recycling and processes it in Australia. H&M's in-store collection bins also accept synthetic activewear from any brand. Both extend the recycled story past the second wear cycle.
Sydney-specific notes
A few details that are different in our climate:
Humidity in summer — December to February drying takes longer. A clothes airer near a fan will outperform hanging on a balcony in still humid air. Mould can develop on activewear left damp in a gym bag for more than a few hours.
Salt air on the coast — activewear used for ocean swims or beach runs needs a fresh-water rinse before machine washing. Salt crystals cause invisible micro-tears in elastane.
Hard water in Western Sydney suburbs — Penrith, Blacktown and parts of Liverpool have harder water than Inner West and Northern Beaches. The vinegar rinse is more important in these areas — the calcium in hard water bonds with detergent residue and accelerates fibre stiffening.
Winter dampness — June to August it is worth investing in a heated airer or laundry rack. The 12 to 24 hours sometimes needed to fully dry activewear in winter encourages mildew on synthetic fibres.
Why this matters for sustainable activewear
Recycled activewear is only as sustainable as its lifespan. A pair of recycled-polyester leggings worn 100 times has a meaningfully smaller footprint than the same pair worn 30 times and binned. The environmental case for recycled fabric collapses if the garment fails after a year of bad laundry habits.
This is also why we are sceptical of brands that recommend putting their own activewear in the dryer. They are either selling thicker, less elastic-dependent pieces (which usually means less performance) or they are quietly fine with the garment failing within 18 months because the customer has to buy another one.
Take care of the garment, and the garment takes care of the cost-per-wear math.
